Environment of Alquézar and Sierra de Guara

The Natural Park of the Sierra and the Canyons of Guara is a place of extraordinary natural beauty that combines a variety of flora and fauna, spectacular limestone formations and gorges, mountains and viewpoints, with manifestation of human interest.

 

 

 

Traces of mankind in this land goes back to prehistoric times as can be seen in the paintings that appear at various caves along the river Vero. These paintings along with other art forms make up "The Cultural Park of the river Vero". In the town of Colungo is the Interpretation Center of the Stone Age Art, where visitors make a journey back in time to the customs, lifestyle and art of the people who inhabited this land for thousands of years.

 

 

You can also make guided tours to the most important sites of Stone Age art, such as: Arpan Cave (Art Levantina), Tozal de Mallata (Art Esquemático), Caves of Barfaluy (Art Esquemático) and Cave Chimiachas (Art Levantina). Outreach visits allow an interpretation of cave art in its natural context, as well as other aspects of the physical environment, history and culture of the area.

 

 

 

In Alquézar you must not miss a visit to the Fabian House Museum of Ethnology, a museum of life, customs and folk

arts of Alquézar and Somontano. It is located in a C.XVII Aragonese house and is home to 350 different pieces of agricultural and house hold pieces.

 


The Collegiate Church of Santa Maria La Mayor of Alquézar is the most visited monument in the region and among important samples it is home to its exceptional cloister with Romanesque capitals, its organ and the Christ of Lecina. Also the church of San Miguel is worth while a visit.
